NIFTY indices and market caps

NIFTY indices and market caps

TLDR: How are the NIFTY indices related to their market caps

There is a lot of confusion I have heard in forums discussing the indices in India and what the weightage of the different funds are when it comes to indices.

I had previously recommended these three index funds

UTI NIFTY index fund

UTI NIFTY next 50 index fund

Motilal Oswal Mid cap 150 index fund

As the go to option for most investors who want exposure to the Indian market.

There has been questions raised to as to why these funds and why not small cap fund or NIFTY 500 directly. I have covered these topics in my previous post here.

But how does the indices compare when it comes to market cap?

AMFI data for Jan to Jun 2019

A visual journey of the key Market cap indices of NIFTY 50, NIFTY Jr, NIFTY Mid cap 150, NIFTY small cap 250 and NIFTY 500. The data is sourced from AMFI data for Jun 2019.

NIFTY 500 weight by underlying indices

Total market cap of indices

Average market cap of companies in the index

Weightage of top 10 and bottom 10 companies within the index

Conclusion

Interesting to see the the drop off between the large cap, mid cap and small cap indices within NIFTY. This data will change on a daily basis as the market moves. But this gives a good ball park view for your reference.

Happy Investing.
